Creative Ways to Save For Your Next Family Vacation

What’s the number one deterrent to you and your family taking a vacation? Time? Work? School? While those may play a role, chances are the greatest stressor and burden towards vacation time is money. As always, we’re here to help! This week, we’re going to offer some useful solutions to saving money on your vacation, so you can sit back, relax and actually enjoy your trip. Read on!

1. Set up an account dedicated solely to your trip:

This may seem obvious, but is often overlooked. It’s fairly easy to set up a separate bank account these days (you can probably do it from your cell phone if you were so inclined). Save towards your “vacation fund” each time you get paid, and vow that is the only account you will withdraw from on your trip. You want to make sure, however, that there are no minimum balance or other fees, and that you can always get cash from an ATM if needed (never get caught without any cash on vacation). You may even find that you over-budget and you’re left with something a little extra after your trip. It’s an easy way to see exactly what you spent.

2. Make it fun for the whole family to save:

When you’re travelling with kids, you’re obviously going to spend a lot more. You need more rooms, more beds, more plane tickets, etc. This stuff is relatively easy to budget for. What adds up, however, are the little things. Four ice creams, two knick-knacks, postcards, etc. Explain that you’re going to pay for the big things like cabin rentals and meals, but they’ll need to save if they want the extra stuff like souvenirs. It always helps to make this kind of thing into a game, so if you have multiple children, see who can save more, or offer them a “bonus allowance” if they save more than they budgeted for.

3. Timing is important:

While it’s difficult to take the red-eye flight with the entire family, it’s one of the best ways to save on your trip. Vacationing at less desirable times can save you more than anything else. For example, check out the flexible travel-date feature many airline sites offer. Flying out on a Thursday and back on a Tuesday will be much cheaper than a Friday to Sunday. Also consider travelling during the “shoulder season,” usually May and September. The challenge here is that kids are usually in school, but the crowds are less dense and almost everything is cheaper. Even if you have to take a little shorter vacation, chances are you’ll get to experience a lot more.

4. Get a membership:

At Midwest Outdoor Resorts, we offer a variety of memberships that allow you to save huge dollars on travel. You can stay at any of our family-friendly resorts at extremely affordable rates, and even travel to gorgeous destinations around the world at a fraction of the normal cost.
